About the Artist:

Kim Blatt is a creative at heart. Having worked in the advertising industry as an Art Director and Creative Director for over twenty-five years, Kim began working with wood as a 3 Dimensional outlet.
In 1997, Kim joined and served on the board of a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners — Keystone Turners. As the chapter newsletter editor, he wrote feature articles that showcased area woodturners. His one-on-one interviews with David Hardy, Norris White, Richard Tuttle, Dave Souza and Jim Fazio provided insights into the minds and souls of many of the areas leading turners.
In February of 1998, he was awarded a grant for a three day seminar with David Ellsworth, one of the nation’s leading turners. Under David’s tutelage, Kim refined his skills and developed a new sense of shape and proportion which is apparent in his work today. In 1999, Kim studied with Michael Lee at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. The class focused on carving, texturing and 3 dimensional embellishments to turned pieces.

Kim’s turnings incorporate a combination of sophisticated, traditional shapes with a contemporary flair, incorporating natural edges and bark inclusions whenever possible. Having moved beyond the “discovery process”, Kim is now focusing on surface embellishments, not as an interpretation of nature, but as a way of adding depth and movement to his forms. Kim’s embellishment techniques include carving, burning, dyeing, engraving, painting and adding acrylic resins and various metals to enhance the natural beauty of the wood itself.
