About titanium
Titanium was discovered in 1791 and was named for the Titans of Greek
mythology. Elemental titanium is a lustrous white metal with low
density, high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. Titanium
metal is considered to be physiologically inert. When pure, titanium
dioxide is relatively clear and has an extremely high index of refraction
with an optical dispersion higher than diamond. Titanium is strong
as steel, but 45% lighter. It is 60% heavier than aluminum but twice
as strong. Titanium is nearly as resistant to corrosion as platinum.
Titanium has an excellent resistance to sea water.
